The Riverside Dealership Where Walter's Automotive Group Began
Walter Kienle, born in Germany to Swiss parents, arrived in the United States in 1948 and found his way to Riverside through the Army. In 1960 he opened a repair shop there, working on the European vehicles he knew best. The turning point came in 1965, when Walter earned the right to sell the cars he'd been repairing. Mercedes-Benz was the first franchise to grow out of that shop, and every Walter's dealership since, both Audi stores, both Porsche stores, and the Van Center, expanded outward from this one. It remains the largest dealership in the group today. Walter passed away in December 2017, and his son Steve Kienle now leads the business his father started. More than six decades on, the dealership that began it all still carries Walter's name and answers to the same family.
