The AMG® GT Roadster has been shaped for pure performance in every dimension. Its light weight, sensuous sculpting and dramatic proportions are a triumph of aerodynamics, aesthetics and attention to detail. Its body is almost entirely composed of aluminum. The ultralight trunk lid employs carbon fiber and Sheet Molding Compound developed by Mercedes-AMG®. A low center of gravity, low drag and optimal downforce add up to highly rewarding driving dynamics. Its visual rewards need no explanation. Composed of aluminum for more than 90% of its weight, the highly rigid spaceframe is a model of lightness. Numerous manufacturing processes optimize the strength, shape and other characteristics of each component, whether it be stamped, extruded or cast. Even the windshield frame, traditionally reinforced with steel, achieves the Mercedes-Benz standard for strength and safety with aluminum. Among the non-aluminum components is a radiator support made of lightweight magnesium. Key components of the AMG® GT roadster body have been strategically reinforced to elevate strength while preserving the lightness and balance of its coupe counterpart. Side sills feature more structural chambers and thicker walls. Additional struts brace the dashboard to the front bulkhead, link the rear suspension towers and support the rear cabin and roll bars. Elements of the front crumple zone intelligently support the intended kinematics of a frontal collision using advanced composites. The power soft top is finely tailored from three layers, for coupelike comfort when closed. The outer fabric layer is available in Beige, Black or Red, while a heated glass rear window is flush-bonded for a clean look and a clearer view. The lightweight top mechanism is composed from magnesium, steel and aluminum. A single button lowers or raises the top in about 11 seconds, at driving speeds of up to 31 mph.
The AMG®-developed V 8 is engineered for a new era of performance. Generating higher output from less displacement, the 550-hp V 8 biturbo engine is more responsive yet up to 30% more efficient. Its massive torque reaches its 502 lb-ft peak at just 2,100 rpm and holds it all the way to 5,500 rpm, for a 3.6-second 0-60 time and instant acceleration at any speed. Yet even with its advanced design and technologies, each AMG® engine is still hand-built and signed by its own craftsman. Advanced piezoelectric fuel injectors spray fuel directly into each cylinder with exceptionally precise metering, ultrafine atomization and incredibly quick on/off switching speed. Based on the immediate, individual needs of each cylinder's combustion cycle, they can supply the ideal fuel spray at up to 2,900 psi with millisecond speed. A new generation of multispark ignition can fire the fuel mixture up to five times in a single cycle, for stronger and cleaner performance. To improve lubrication during hard cornering and other extremes, a dry sump replaces the traditional oil pan with a remote reservoir with new lightweight composite construction. The design also allows a lower overall engine profile, so the engine can be mounted more than two inches lower in the vehicle, behind the front axle. This front-mid-engine configuration contributes significantly to the car's ultralow center of gravity and ideal 47:53 front/rear weight distribution. For better performance and packaging, the AMG® V 8's twin turbos are placed inside the V of the engine. The layout sends the compressed charge from each turbo to its bank of cylinders via an extremely short path, with near-zero pressure loss or turbo lag. The high-pressure turbos spool up quickly to as much as 186,000 rpm. The setup is also highly efficient from intake to exhaust, with liquid-cooled intercoolers and close-mounted catalysts that reach peak efficiency in seconds.
Racing-derived double wishbones are employed all four wheels. All of the suspension arms and the hub carriers are forged aluminum, maximizing strength and rigidity while minimizing unsprung weight for more precise handling response. Upper and lower wishbones are parallel and each rear shock absorber is mounted at its lower point to the hub carrier, for exceptionally direct response with minimal vibration. The result is highly balanced and predictable handling, even at the limits. The AMG® RIDE CONTROL Sport Suspension features electronically controlled 3-stage adaptive damping. It instantly varies the suspension characteristics to the driving situation, to help reduce body roll, pitch and dive while maximizing agility and tire contact. Three modes are selectable via AMG® DYNAMIC SELECT or a separate pushbutton control: Comfort, Sport and Sport+ adapt the damping rates at progressively lower thresholds of wheel motion, lateral g-forces and driving speed. The rack-and-pinion steering system is mounted to a rigid, lightweight subframe. A variable ratio helps assure the ideal response and feedback from hairpin turns to precise small adjustments, while speed-sensing hydraulic power assist optimizes effort and feel. The 3-spoke AMG® Performance steering wheel features a racing-style flat-bottom design, ideally placed spokes and aluminum shift paddles. Three styles of covering are available. Engineered for an ideal balance of agility and stability, electromechanical actuators take the place of the rear-axle control arms and allow up to 1.5 degrees of toe change. Under 62 mph, the rear wheels steer opposite the fronts, tightening the turning radius for better maneuverability in tight turns or even parking. Above 62 mph, the rear wheels steer in phase with the fronts, boosting stability, rear-wheel grip, steering response in high-speed corners and control in evasive moves.
Though fully conceived and developed by AMG®, the Mercedes-AMG® GT body structure and safety systems conform to the industry-leading standards of Mercedes-Benz. In addition to its advanced restraints and active safety systems, the vehicle underwent the full testing regimen during its development, from countless computer simulations with its aluminum spaceframe and body to an extensive series of actual crash tests. A pair of tubular roll bars are affixed to the car's rigid, reinforced rear bulkhead. The windshield frame is also fortified. A system of eight advanced air bags is designed to offer protection in a variety of accident types. Dual-stage front air bags are augmented by knee air bags for both the driver and passenger. And each seating position is provided with a side-impact thorax/pelvis air bag and curtain-type head protection air bag. Radar-based technology can alert you if you're approaching a vehicle ahead, or even some stationary objects, at a speed and distance that suggest a collision is likely. As soon as you start to brake, it can automatically provide an appropriate level of braking to help prevent a collision or reduce its severity.
